But Where Do I Start?
Have you ever been in the position where you have so much on your to-do list and you just don't know where to start? You think about starting in one direction and then you start questioning if that's the best place to begin.
So, how do we decide? What if the answer was simple?
Start by asking some questions like when I look at what I want to achieve this week (month, quarter or year depending on how you plan):
- what are the important things I need to achieve today?
- what is going to get me closer to achieving my goal?
Notice the chatter start in your head like "But it's all important.... you have to do XYZ because otherwise... they are expecting you to deliver this by Friday... and so on and on.
We may decide to prioritise our work based on what we think is urgent but the problem is that sometimes those things which are urgent aren't really important because they don't help us achieve our goals. President Eisenhower said: I have two kinds of problems: the urgent and the important. The urgent are not important and the important are never urgent.
When we get caught up in responding to the urgent all the time, we don't make room for working on what's important because we are too busy responding to urgent emails and calls. It's the important that helps us gain traction on the journey towards achieving our goals.
Prioritising working on those actions and results that will help create revenue for our business, attract more clients and that will lead to business growth is where we want to start.
Sometimes we have issues that need addressing because they are urgent and important and that's okay. It's interesting to note that the more time we spend working on what's important the less "fires" we have to put out in our business, because we have already planned and done the work to pre-empt them happening in the future.
Once the decision is made about what's important, then we get to manage our mind around the drama that comes up. If you want some help working through your drama, reach out for a chat with me.
