Lessons from Park Run
A few months ago, I returned to our local Park Run after a break.
Park Run is a fantastic free community event held worldwide. People of all ages and fitness levels come together to walk, jog, run, or volunteer along a 5-kilometre course on the foreshore.
This week, I reflected on some lessons I’ve learned:
1. When I focus purely on improving my time, I lose sight of why I’m doing this—for fun. It’s not just about the finish line; it’s about enjoying the process.
2. Each run, regardless of my time, is a victory. Getting up when I’d rather hit snooze and keeping a promise to myself keeps me motivated for the next run.
3. Running at my own pace is crucial. I’m more of a tortoise than a hare, so I can burn out if I try to compete too quickly with others. Running at my own pace makes it easier to improve.
4. My headspace before the race impacts my performance. When I think about all the reasons I’m not going to run well, like a lousy night’s sleep or low energy, my confidence drops. So, if I struggle during the race, those doubts will pop up, and my race will suffer. A helpful mindset can enhance my performance and support me in tough moments.
5. Community support matters. Encouragement from everyone else makes it easier to keep going.
These lessons extend beyond the track and apply to all areas of my life, especially my business and maybe yours:
Achieving the Goal is Only Part of the Equation: Focusing solely on metrics like revenue or growth can make you lose sight of your original purpose. Ensure that your business activities align with your core values and bring you fulfilment, not just results.
Acknowledge Every Achievement: Small milestones, like completing a task or hitting a weekly goal, deserve recognition. These victories build momentum and reinforce your commitment to long-term success.
Set a Sustainable Pace: Don't rush to match others’ success or timelines. Understand your unique business rhythm and set a pace that prevents burnout while fostering steady growth on your terms.
Cultivate a Success-Oriented Mindset: Your mindset before tackling a business challenge can influence the outcome. Approach tasks confidently and positively to improve your performance and overcome obstacles.
Build a Supportive Network: As community support fuels motivation, surrounding yourself with like-minded entrepreneurs, mentors, or a strong team can provide the encouragement and insights you need to thrive.
Applying these lessons will help you build a sustainable, purpose-driven business that aligns with your personal values and goals.
